Panama
fishing guide.
Seasons, species, routes and everything worth knowing before booking a fishing charter in Panama, from the bay to the Pearl Islands.
Three kinds of water
Panama does not offer one fishing day, it offers three, and picking the wrong one is the most common mistake visitors make. Here is the honest breakdown.
- Bay and city. Protected water, skyline views, short 2 to 4 hour runs. Best for first timers, families and sunset trips.
- Taboga and coast. Inshore action forty five minutes out, island close by, flexible swim stops and beach time.
- Pearl Islands and offshore. Distance, big species, full Pacific energy. Mahi mahi, tuna and roosterfish on a full day.
When to come
- December to April. Dry season. Flattest seas, best visibility, the most comfortable months to be on the water.
- May to November. Green season. Higher chance of afternoon rain, but more productive water for big offshore species.
- July to October. Humpback whales pass through the Gulf of Panama. Never guaranteed, always memorable.
What to bring
Sunscreen, a cap, polarized sunglasses, a light layer for the wind while running, a towel and swimwear if you plan to swim. Everything else, rods, bait, ice, water and safety gear, is already on board.
